I have been involved with IONM since the early 1980's when I founded the Neuromonitoring Service at UC San Francisco, where I held faculty positions in the departments of Neurological Surgery, Otolaryngology, and Anesthesia. I have personally monitored over 4,000 surgical cases in the OR, and taught IONM techniques, theory, and interpretation to hundreds of students including technologists, neurologists, anesthesiologists, and surgeons. I have published numerous journal articles and book chapters in multiple areas of IONM, including skull base surgery, cortical and spinal cord mapping, cerebral aneurysms, selective dorsal rhizotomies, and motor evoked potentials. I maintain an active involvement in a private IONM practice in the San Francisco region.

Bernard Allan Cohen is the Founder and Managing Director of Neurological Monitoring Associates, LLC (NMA). He obtained his Ph.D. degree from the graduate school of Marquette University in 1975. In conjunction with the School of Medicine, his research and dissertations have focused on the analysis of electrical activity of the brain and nervous system using computers. His entire career has been devoted to, and is a result of, his research work involving analysis of electrical activity of the brain and nervous system.

Dr. Cohen has been a member of the faculty of the Emory University Medical School, the Medical College of Wisconsin and the Milwaukee School of Engineering. He is currently in private practice focusing exclusively on intraoperative neurophysiological monitoring (IONM). He has published over 100 papers and book chapters, has presented his work at national and international meetings and is a frequently invited speaker, nationally and internationally. He teaches neuromonitoring methods around the world and has helped several new programs and societies in their development stages.

In addition to his primary practice at more than twenty-five Wisconsin hospitals with dozens of surgical specialists, he lectures at and consults with numerous other hospitals, clinics and surgeons throughout the United States, Europe and the Middle East.
Dr. Cohen is a Fellow of the American Society for Neurophysiological Monitoring and is also a Fellow of the American Clinical Neurophysiology Society. He is Certified in Neurological Intraoperative Monitoring by the American Board of Registration of Electroencephalographic and Evoked Potential Technologists. He was the first person in Wisconsin to receive the prestigious designation as Diplomate of the American Board of Neurophysiological Monitoring. He has twice been elected President of the American Society of Neurophysiological Monitoring leading the society through many innovative advances in both governance and prominence.

He has been involved in non-profit charities and homeless organizations in the US and in Israel. He was one of the founders of three private religious schools in Milwaukee and works to support one of the largest homeless organizations in Jerusalem, Israel, sustaining the poorest of the poor. He also has been active for more than 20 years in homeless support in Milwaukee. He serves on the Corporation Board of the Milwaukee School of Engineering and has held Board and Officer positions in many non-profits.
